Compare dry and wet cat food costs

Compare dry and wet cat food spending from package prices, package quantities and daily amounts you already plan to feed.

Compare the food spending represented by the dry and wet amounts you actually plan to feed each cat per day. Enter each package's price and net quantity, then the daily amount for that food in the same unit. Dry and wet foods can use different units; each package quantity only needs to match its own daily amount.

Enter both package prices, quantities and planned daily amounts, then compare.

Method for each food: package price ÷ package quantity × daily amount per cat × cat count. Monthly estimate uses 30.4 days; yearly estimate uses 365 days. The dollar difference is arithmetic only. This comparison does not assess nutrition, calories, suitability, food quality or equivalence between foods, and it does not recommend portions.

Use the amount you have already chosen for each food, including amounts in a mixed-feeding plan. Follow each product's label and ask your veterinary team what feeding plan fits your cat. FDA says animal food labels include a net quantity statement and directs individual pet-food-use questions to a veterinarian. The label does not make two foods nutritionally equivalent.

For one-food estimates, use the cat food cost calculator or dog food cost calculator. The food budget guide explains label-based estimating, and the nutritional adequacy statement guide explains the label’s complete-and-balanced claim. The pet cost planner covers a broader monthly budget. Product referrals are inactive.

How it works

For each food, enter the package price, package quantity, and daily amount you already plan to feed each cat. The package quantity and daily amount must match units for that food. Enter the number of cats eating those amounts. Dry and wet foods may use different units.

Good to know

How does the dry versus wet food cost comparison work?

For each food, it divides the entered package price by its package quantity, then multiplies by the daily amount per cat and cat count. It shows daily, 30.4-day-month and 365-day-year estimates and the arithmetic difference between the entered totals.

Does a lower cost mean the foods are nutritionally equivalent?

No. This tool compares spending from your entries only. It does not assess calories, nutritional adequacy, suitability, quality or equivalence. Ask your veterinary team about an appropriate feeding plan.

Can I compare a mixed-feeding plan?

Yes. Enter the dry and wet amounts you already plan to feed per cat per day. Use matching units within each food’s package and daily amount; the dry and wet units do not need to match each other. The calculator does not recommend portions.

Formula and attribution

Last updated:

each food daily cost = (that food package price ÷ that food package quantity) × that food daily amount per cat × cat count; monthly estimate = daily cost × 30.4; yearly estimate = daily cost × 365; difference = absolute difference between dry and wet estimates

Output (USD): Arithmetic dry and wet food costs per day, 30.4-day month and 365-day year, plus their entered-cost difference. Does not assess nutritional equivalence or recommend portions.
