Organize veterinary estimates and follow-up questions
Compare written veterinary estimates for the same proposed service by recording estimate ranges, included items, exclusions, and follow-up questions.
Use this worksheet to organize written veterinary estimates for the same proposed service. Transcribe the low and high totals shown by each clinic and record what the estimate includes or leaves open. The result is a comparison aid, not a medical recommendation or a substitute for discussing options with a veterinarian.
Shared comparison context
Compare estimates only when they refer to the same pet and proposed service. Different plans may include different tests, procedures, medications, monitoring, or follow-up; matching totals alone does not make plans medically equivalent.
Written estimates
Clinic 1
Clinic 2
2 estimates listed (maximum 4).
Enter the low and high totals from at least two written estimates.
Method: the worksheet displays each low–high range exactly as entered and calculates endpoint differences between estimates. Enter amounts in U.S. dollars. It does not add missing services, taxes, fees, or insurance reimbursements, and it does not decide whether options are equivalent. Confirm the estimate scope, any conditions, and how changes will be discussed directly with each clinic.
Questions to take back to the clinic
- Which examination, diagnostics, procedure, medication, monitoring, and follow-up items are included in this range?
- What circumstances could change the estimate, and how will the clinic contact me before additional work or charges?
- Are there other medically reasonable options for my pet, and what are their expected benefits, risks, and costs?
- Can I have the estimate and proposed plan in writing, with unclear items identified?
Cornell's veterinary hospital says it provides an estimate for a recommended plan after examining the pet. The California Veterinary Medical Board strongly recommends written estimates but notes they are not legally required under its stated guidance. Requirements and processes vary by location, so consult your local veterinary regulator. This worksheet does not diagnose, prioritize, or prescribe care.
For other planning, see the pet cost planner, emergency fund planner, and pet insurance policy checklist.

How it works
Enter the same proposed service and pet context for each clinic, then transcribe each written estimate's low and high amounts and note what is included or still unclear. The worksheet only organizes your entries and does not compare medical options or recommend treatment.
Good to know
Can I compare estimates before the pet is examined?
A clinic may need to examine the animal before it can prepare a treatment estimate. Cornell's veterinary hospital says it provides an estimate for a recommended plan after examination. Ask each clinic what information it needs and what the estimate covers.
Does this tell me which treatment or clinic to choose?
No. It adds only the estimate ranges you enter. It does not assess medical need, expected outcome, risk, clinic quality, or whether two proposed plans are clinically equivalent. Discuss those questions with a veterinarian.
Are written estimates required everywhere?
Rules vary by location. The California Veterinary Medical Board says written estimates are strongly recommended but are not legally required under its stated guidance. Check the veterinary regulator where you live.

per-clinic estimate range = visitor-entered low and high totals transcribed from that clinic's written estimate; range difference = one clinic's entered endpoint minus another clinic's corresponding endpoint
- service_context_and_clinic (visitor-entered text): Short description of the proposed service and pet context plus a clinic label; used only to organize estimates for the same comparison.
- estimate_low_and_high (USD per written estimate): Low and high totals transcribed by the visitor from a written clinic estimate; the tool supplies no prices.
- included_and_open_questions (visitor checklist and notes): Items explicitly confirmed in the estimate and questions the visitor still wants to ask.
Output (USD per estimate): Displays each entered estimate range and arithmetic endpoint differences for up to four clinics; does not assess medical options, equivalence, quality, or treatment suitability.
