Household budget worksheet · Reviewed November 3, 2026

Allocate a household pet budget across your animals

Add each pet’s monthly costs and shared household expenses to see the combined budget and an even per-pet allocation.

Build a monthly household estimate from your own current amounts. Add one row per pet, enter each pet’s individual monthly costs, then enter shared costs once. This worksheet does not use market averages or suggest what you should spend.

Monthly cost by pet

Combine the monthly costs you want to track for each pet, such as food, care set-asides, insurance or supplies. Use the same categories and time period for every row where practical, and avoid counting a shared expense again here.

2 pets listed (maximum 12).

Shared household costs

Enter shared monthly costs once, including only the amount you want to allocate across the listed pets.

Enter your amounts, then calculate.

Allocation assumption: shared costs are divided evenly by the number of pet rows. The per-pet figures are bookkeeping estimates, not a claim that each animal uses an equal share. Household monthly total = individual monthly amounts added together + shared monthly amount. The 12-month estimate is that total × 12; it excludes any unentered, one-time, irregular or changing costs.

Planning notes

Pet needs and care plans are individual. Use current local quotes and discuss care questions with a veterinary professional. The AVMA provides pet owner resources for planning and care.

Use the annual budget by pet worksheet to enter yearly food, care and supplies amounts separately for each animal; this page instead estimates monthly costs and an even shared-cost allocation. The pet cost planner provides a simpler household estimate, and the food cost calculator handles food arithmetic.

How it works

Add a row for each pet and enter that pet’s monthly amount. Enter shared household costs once; the worksheet divides that total evenly across the pets you list, then shows monthly and 12-month totals.

Good to know

How does the worksheet allocate shared costs?

It divides the shared monthly amount evenly by the number of pet rows. This is a simple accounting assumption; change the allocation outside the tool if pets use shared items or services in different amounts.

Does the result tell me what pets should cost?

No. It uses only your own entries and has no market averages, required purchases or care recommendations.

What does the annual total include?

It multiplies the entered monthly household total by 12. It excludes one-time and irregular costs unless you convert and include them in your own monthly figures; it does not account for price changes or emergencies.

Formula and attribution

Last updated:

monthly household total = sum of each pet's entered monthly amount + shared monthly costs; even shared allocation per pet = shared monthly costs ÷ number of pet rows; annual total = monthly household total × 12

Output (USD): Household monthly and 12-month totals plus illustrative even per-pet shares, based only on visitor entries; no market prices or care requirements are assumed.
