Compare your dog’s measurement with a harness chart

Compare a dog’s measured chest girth with size ranges copied from the current manufacturer chart for a specific harness model.

Compare one dog’s measured chest girth with the size ranges published for the specific harness you plan to buy. Copy the size names and lower/upper bounds from that product’s current manufacturer chart; charts can differ by model, even within one brand.

Measure using the product instructions

Use a flexible tape or a string that you measure afterward. Follow the maker’s instructions for where and how snugly to measure. For example, Ruffwear describes its harness girth measurement as the widest part of the rib cage just behind the front legs. If the product instructions differ, use those instructions instead. Record the measurement and every chart value in the same unit.

Enter ranges from the intended harness chart

Chart range 1
Chart range 2
Chart range 3
Chart range 4
Chart range 5

Enter a measurement and at least one complete size range from the intended product’s chart.

Method: a size is listed when the entered measurement is greater than or equal to that range’s minimum and less than or equal to its maximum. The comparison is arithmetic only; it does not assess body shape, adjustability, comfort, safety, or suitability.

Recheck the manufacturer’s current chart, measurement location, unit, and between-size instructions on the exact product page before ordering. A number inside a range does not guarantee a suitable fit. After trying a harness on, inspect its fit and adjust it according to the maker’s directions; contact the manufacturer or retailer if fit is unclear. No product referrals are active.

Ruffwear’s measuring guide is one example of manufacturer-specific instructions: it says to measure girth at the widest part of the rib cage, usually just behind the front legs, and provides its own size chart. Its measurements are not used as defaults here because products and fit guidance vary.

How it works

Measure the dog according to the instructions for the intended harness. Enter the measurement, select its unit, and copy at least one size name and minimum/maximum range from that exact product’s current manufacturer chart. The tool lists entered ranges that contain the measurement and flags overlapping ranges; it cannot determine fit.

Good to know

Where should I measure my dog?

Follow the instructions for the exact harness. Ruffwear’s guide, for example, describes its girth measurement as the widest part of the rib cage just behind the front legs; another maker or model may give different instructions.

Can this checker tell me which harness will fit?

No. It only compares your number with ranges you copied. It does not assess shape, adjustability, comfort, safety, or suitability, and a chart match does not guarantee fit.

What if my measurement is between sizes or matches two?

Check the intended product’s current chart and its between-size guidance. If entered ranges overlap, the checker reports every matching size and asks you to verify the manufacturer’s directions.

Last updated:

A size range matches when its visitor-entered minimum ≤ measured girth ≤ visitor-entered maximum, with all inputs in one selected unit.

Output (matching size labels or no entered range match): Arithmetic chart comparison only; does not determine fit, comfort, safety, or product suitability.
