Plan a first-year puppy budget from your own quotes
Separate one-time puppy setup quotes from recurring costs and calculate a first-year total using your own local prices.
Build a first-year plan from prices you collect for your area and puppy. This worksheet keeps one-time setup separate from recurring costs; it does not supply average prices or assume which services your puppy needs.
One-time setup quotes
Enter a quote or your planned amount for each item. Leave items blank or at zero if they do not apply.
Monthly recurring amounts
Enter a monthly amount. If a provider quotes a different interval, convert the quote yourself before entering it.
Annual recurring quotes
Enter yearly totals here, such as a renewal or service billed annually. Do not repeat amounts already included above.
Enter your quotes and amounts, then calculate.
Method: one-time setup total + (monthly recurring total × 12) + annual recurring total. This assumes the entered recurring costs apply for the full first year. It excludes unentered costs, emergencies, price changes and changes in care needs; the result is a planning worksheet, not a quote or prediction.
Care planning prompts to price with your veterinary team
The AVMA recommends arranging an examination for a new dog and bringing available health, vaccination and deworming records. AAHA’s puppy checklist prompts owners to discuss preventive care and the costs of care options with a veterinary team. Vaccine recommendations can depend on an individual dog’s risk and lifestyle, so use these as questions for your veterinarian rather than a fixed checklist of required services.
Prepare vaccination records and questions with the dog and cat vaccination visit checklist.
- Ask what records to bring and what should be checked at the first visit.
- Request an itemized estimate for care your veterinary team recommends for this puppy.
- Ask which costs are one-time, recurring, optional or dependent on local rules and the puppy’s circumstances.
For adoption handoff records and emergency contacts, use the adoption first-year checklist. For ongoing estimates, compare your entries with the pet cost planner and pet food portion planner. The food budget guide explains how to use a package label as a budgeting input. Product referrals are inactive.

How it works
Enter your own one-time quotes, monthly amounts and annual recurring quotes. The planner totals one-time setup separately, converts monthly amounts to 12 months, and adds annual recurring amounts for a first-year planning total.
Good to know
Does this planner say what a puppy should cost?
No. It uses only amounts you enter from your own adoption or purchase details, local providers and household choices. It does not publish an average or assume a required service price.
How do I enter recurring quotes?
Enter monthly costs in the monthly section and yearly recurring quotes in the annual section. For a different billing interval, convert your quote to a monthly or annual amount before entering it; the result assumes each recurring amount continues through the first year.
Which veterinary items should I budget for?
Ask a veterinary team what applies to your puppy and request an itemized estimate. The AVMA recommends arranging an examination for a new dog and bringing available vaccination and deworming history. AAHA guidance says vaccine choices account for the individual dog’s needs and risk. This planner does not recommend treatments or schedules.
Is this a complete cost forecast?
No. It is a checklist-style worksheet, not a quote or prediction. It excludes unentered costs, emergencies, price changes, inflation, taxes, financing and changes in care needs.
