Plan cat litter volume from tray dimensions and your routine
Estimate initial-fill and ongoing monthly cat litter volume from tray dimensions, entered depth, changes and top-ups; compare prorated package cost with whole-package purchase estimates.
Estimate litter volume for the tray dimensions and routine you enter. The planner separates one initial fill from the ongoing monthly plan and can price package equivalents when you know a package's volume in liters.
Enter tray dimensions and the routine you actually use, then calculate.
Method: one full fill = inside length × inside width × entered depth. Centimeter dimensions convert cubic centimeters to liters by dividing by 1,000; inch dimensions use the NIST unit factors to convert cubic inches to milliliters. Initial fill = one full fill × trays. Ongoing monthly volume = (full fill × complete changes per month + weekly top-up × 365 ÷ 7 ÷ 12) × trays. Package equivalents divide each volume by the entered package liters; optional cost multiplies package equivalents by the entered USD package price.
NIST lists the cited unit conversions. This rectangular-volume estimate assumes a level fill and straight-sided trays. Enter the inside dimensions and your own fill depth and routine; it does not recommend a depth, top-up amount, or cleaning frequency. It does not account for tapered trays, clumping, scooping, spills, waste, or changes in routine. Enter package volume only when you know it; do not convert a package weight to liters without product-specific information. With package details, the result shows both prorated package equivalents and the whole packages needed to cover each amount. The whole-package cost assumes each package has the entered price and is bought separately for that line; it does not account for leftover litter carried between the initial fill and later months. The calculation runs in this browser and does not fetch external data.
Unit sources: NIST inch-to-centimeter factors and NIST volume units. ASPCA's general cat-care guidance discusses litter-box upkeep, but does not provide a universal litter amount or schedule. Ask your veterinary team about litter-box changes or concerns.
For an estimate from observed daily use and package price, see the cat litter cost calculator. For other household consumables, use the pet supply restock estimator or the cat first-year budget worksheet.

How it works
Select inches or centimeters and enter the trays’ inside dimensions and your own fill depth. Add the complete changes per month and any weekly top-up per tray. Optionally enter both known package volume in liters and its price to see fractional package cost and whole packages needed for the initial fill and monthly plan. The tool separates one initial fill from the ongoing plan.
Good to know
How does this cat litter calculator estimate volume?
For each full fill it multiplies the entered inside tray length, width, and fill depth, then converts the result to liters. Initial fill is multiplied by the number of trays. The ongoing monthly estimate combines full changes per month with weekly top-up converted using 365 ÷ 7 ÷ 12, then multiplies by tray count.
Does it recommend a litter depth or change schedule?
No. Enter the depth and routine you use or are considering. The result is rectangular-volume arithmetic, not a cleaning recommendation or a prediction of actual consumption.
Can I calculate package cost when a bag is sold by weight?
Only if you know its volume in liters. The tool does not convert package weight to volume because litter density varies; enter both package volume and price or leave both blank.
Why is the initial fill separate from monthly use?
The initial fill is one full tray volume per tray. Ongoing use includes only the complete changes and top-ups you entered, so the two figures remain visible separately.
What is the difference between prorated cost and whole-package cost?
Prorated cost multiplies the fraction of package volume used by the entered package price. Whole-package cost rounds package equivalents up to the next whole package for each line. It treats initial fill and monthly use separately and does not carry leftovers between them, so use it as a separate-line purchase estimate rather than a stock-aware shopping schedule.

liters per full fill = length × width × depth × unit conversion; centimeters: cm³ ÷ 1,000; inches: in³ × 16.387064 mL/in³ ÷ 1,000; initial liters = full-fill liters × trays; ongoing monthly liters = (full-fill liters × complete changes per month + weekly top-up liters per tray × 365 ÷ 7 ÷ 12) × trays; package equivalents = liters ÷ entered package liters; prorated cost = package equivalents × entered package price; whole packages needed = ceiling(package equivalents); whole-package purchase estimate = whole packages needed × package price, calculated separately for initial fill and monthly plan
- tray_dimensions_and_fill_depth (visitor-selected inches or centimeters): Inside length, inside width, and entered fill depth for a straight-sided rectangular-volume estimate.
- tray_count (whole trays): Number of trays included in the visitor-entered plan.
- complete_changes_per_month (changes per month): Complete changes per month entered by the visitor; no schedule is recommended.
- weekly_top_up (liters per tray per week): Visitor-entered top-up for each tray.
- package_volume_and_price (liters and USD): Optional known package volume and price; both are required for package and cost arithmetic.
Output (liters, package equivalents, and USD when package inputs are complete): Initial-fill and ongoing 30.4-day month and 12-month volume estimates from visitor inputs; when package inputs are complete, includes prorated cost and separate whole-package purchase estimates without carrying leftovers between lines. Assumes routine remains constant and is not a usage recommendation.
