Compare cat food cost per 1,000 kcal
Compare two or three cat foods using package price, net weight and the calorie content stated on each label.
Compare the label-based food cost of two or three cat-food options. Enter each package price, net weight in kilograms or pounds, and the exact product label’s calorie content in kcal/kg as fed. The tool calculates package calories and price per 1,000 kcal from those entries; it does not recommend a food or feeding amount.
Find the calorie value on the package
- Find the label section headed “Calorie Content.” AAFCO explains that the calorie statement is distinct from the guaranteed analysis, even when the two appear near each other.
- Use the number expressed as kcal/kg as fed for this comparison. Do not enter a second number stated per cup, can, or other familiar unit in the kcal/kg field.
- Match the statement to the exact product and recipe, then copy its package net weight and current price. If you cannot identify the kcal/kg value, ask the manufacturer rather than estimating it from guaranteed-analysis percentages.
Enter label and price details for at least two options, then compare.
Each result repeats the entered price, package weight and label calorie value, including the kilogram conversion when you enter pounds, so you can check the comparison basis.
Method: package weight in pounds is converted to kilograms using 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg. Package calories = package weight in kg × label kcal/kg. Cost per 1,000 kcal = package price ÷ package calories × 1,000. Example with fictional values: a 4 kg package at 3,600 kcal/kg contains 14,400 kcal; at $48, its arithmetic cost is $3.33 per 1,000 kcal. This excludes discounts, tax, delivery, waste, and changing prices.
Use the calorie statement for the exact product and recipe, not the guaranteed-analysis percentages. AAFCO says pet-food calorie content is stated as kcal/kg as fed and per a familiar unit, and cautions that moisture differences affect kcal/kg comparisons and calorie content should not be the sole food-selection factor. NIST gives the pound-to-kilogram conversion factor used here. This tool only compares the price represented by your entries. It does not assess nutritional adequacy, moisture-adjusted nutrient levels, suitability, quality, equivalence, or a feeding plan. Ask your veterinary team about your cat’s individual needs.
Reading a wet-food versus dry-food result
You can enter wet and dry foods if you have each exact product’s kcal/kg-as-fed statement, but interpret the result only as price per entered calorie. AAFCO notes that canned food can have fewer kcal/kg as fed than dry food because it contains more moisture. This calculator does not adjust nutrient levels for moisture or determine whether foods are nutritionally comparable, so a lower cost per 1,000 kcal is not a complete measure of food value or suitability. Check each label’s nutritional adequacy statement and ask your veterinary team about your cat’s needs.
For cost based on a daily amount already chosen, see the cat food cost per month calculator. The food budget guide explains label-based estimates, and the nutritional adequacy guide explains label claims.

How it works
For each option, enter the current package price, net weight in kilograms or pounds, and label calorie content in kcal/kg as fed. Pound weights are converted to kilograms before the tool calculates package calories and arithmetic cost per 1,000 kcal.
Good to know
How is cost per 1,000 kcal calculated?
Package calories equal package weight in kilograms multiplied by label kcal/kg. Cost per 1,000 kcal equals package price divided by package calories, multiplied by 1,000.
Does the lowest cost mean a food is best for my cat?
No. This compares entered price and label energy only. It does not assess nutritional adequacy, moisture-adjusted nutrient levels, suitability, quality or equivalence. Ask your veterinary team about your cat’s needs.
Can I use kcal per cup or can?
This version requires kcal/kg as fed. Enter package weight in kilograms or pounds; pound weights are converted to kilograms. AAFCO explains that labels also state calories per familiar unit; do not enter that value in the kcal/kg field.
Does cost per 1,000 kcal show the cost to feed my cat each day?
No. It compares package price for the label calories entered. It does not choose a daily amount or feeding plan. For a daily cost estimate using an amount you have already chosen, use the cat food cost per month calculator.
Can I compare wet and dry cat food with this calculator?
You can compare the entered price per label calorie, but that is not a complete measure of food value or suitability. AAFCO notes that canned food can have fewer kcal/kg as fed because of its higher moisture content. This calculator does not adjust nutrient levels for moisture or assess nutritional comparability. Check each label’s nutritional adequacy statement and ask your veterinary team about your cat’s needs.

package calories = package net weight in kg × label kcal/kg as fed; cost per 1,000 kcal = package price ÷ package calories × 1,000
- package_price (USD/package): Visitor-entered current price for the exact cat-food package.
- package_net_weight (kg/package): Visitor-entered package net weight converted to kilograms.
- label_calorie_content (kcal/kg as fed): Visitor-entered calorie content for the exact food from its label.
Output (USD per 1,000 kcal and kcal/package): Arithmetic comparison for two or three visitor-entered cat-food options; does not assess nutrition, suitability or a feeding amount.
